When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
– Matthew 2:16 (NIV)
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.orgThis is a part of the Christmas story that is unpleasant. Herod, a bloodthirsty king, realized that the Christ was born and was determined to do everything that he could to kill Jesus. Jesus Christ has disturbed the status quo from the day that He was born. He challenges political views, power structures, and economic systems. This child would cause more turmoil before He would bring redemption to His people. In the same way, our lives may become harder when we come to know Jesus Christ. Don’t expect an easy journey. This is not the Biblical story and it will probably never change this side of heaven.
