INSPIRATION

His mother held him in her arms – this beautiful baby she longed for. As she rocked her precious child, she couldn’t help but wonder to herself, “What will the future bring for my baby boy?”

Growing up in the rough Judean countryside didn’t give this young man an easy life. The family lived in occupied territory, ruled by the hated Romans. Foreign soldiers terrorized the land bringing with them fear and hate.

Amid this chaos, the young boy found himself drawn into a group of like-minded “patriots” whose only goal was to rid the country of the despised Romans. With fierce passion driving their hearts, this gang of young men set out to conquer at any cost.

Theirs was a motivation driven by one emotion — hatred. Then one day, the young man happened to get caught-up in a crowd of people. They were going to hear a new voice. Some said this fellow was the long awaited Messiah. For a young man, now an adult, who was intent on revenge, an uprising by another so-called religious saviour was the last thing he needed. Rob, pillage, kill – this was the motto he lived by. But on this day, he decided to follow the crowd and listen, even if it were for just a few minutes. What he heard sounded downright stupid. Nothing but absolute nonsense. “Love your neighbor.” “Do good to them that despitefully use you.” “If someone asks you for your coat, give them your shirt, too.” “When someone hits you on the right side of your face, turn and offer

them the left side.” This was rubbish if he had ever heard it.  Who in their right mind could ever get ahead and accomplish anything behaving like this. And yet, as this silent observer listened, for some strange reason he found himself drawn to the “Man” uttering these strange words. There was something appealing about the way the “Man” spoke. And for a moment, the rebel heart softened – his thoughts wandered as he remembered the gentle mother who loved him, who prayed for him, who taught him right from wrong.  However, in one split second he decided to push those silly thoughts aside. In that moment, his fate was sealed – or so he thought.  He had to meet with his gang of like-minded brothers in crime.  Yet within weeks, those hated Roman soldiers had this boy in their crosshairs. He and a friend were captured, convicted, and sentenced to death on a Roman cross. Awaiting the day of his crucifixion, the young man had time to think about the path he had chosen. The fact was, he was probably getting what he deserved. He had chosen to live by the sword so he would die by the sword.

Then one dark day, he and his thieving buddy were dragged to a hill called Golgotha. They thought they were the only two troublemakers to be executed. But low and behold, a third cross was lying on the ground waiting to accept some other unwilling victim. To the shock of the rebel, the “Man” who was to be the occupant of cross number 3 was none other than “Mr. Love Your Enemies.” Well…well…well!  Just see where this philosophy got this guy; I guess his enemies decided to show him who was boss.

The young man, now identified only as “Thief #1,” shook his head. It didn’t seem to matter if you were a saintly Messiah or a devilish robber – you ended up in the same place on the same day on the same hill with the same verdict – death by crucifixion.

As three crosses were planted in the hard, rocky dirt of Golgotha’s mountain crest on a Friday so long ago, I think about the three occupants of those rough hewn pieces of wood, bodies wracked with unthinkable pain, men groaning in agony as they struggled for each breath of air to feed their oxygen starved lungs. Three lying men – and three crying mothers. For all we know, Mary wasn’t the only mom who was with her boy, at the foot of a cross that day. Maybe there were two other moms there, also. Moms who had dreams for their boys. How those dreams had been shattered. Everybody had watched as their boys had taken the road to ruin. Long ago townsfolk had given up on these criminal louses.  But moms – they don’t give up so easy.  When the trial began, the mothers hoped for the best but once the verdict came down – hope soon became a thing of the past. Now doomsday had arrived.

Everyone had given up. The sentence was guilty. There wasn’t any way out. These thieves were obviously guilty. They knew it – and so did everybody else. “We’re getting what we deserve,” Give it up.  We got caught.  We’re the losers here.

Yet, through the raucous laughter and mocking, amid the cruelty of the moment, a lone voice was heard, “Father, forgive them.”  It was a voice “Thief #1” had heard before.  A calm voice filled with gentleness and love.  And in a moment, a thought passed through his mind, “What if it wasn’t too late?  What if he hadn’t gone too far? What did he have to lose anyway?”

He decided that even if it were the last breath of air he sucked in he’d ask for one favor of the “Man.” “When you come, will you remember me?” The me I could have been. The me I really wanted to be. The me my mom believed I was.

And from the dying lips of the “Man” of love and forgiveness, came the word, “Yes!”  No questions asked!  No stipulations!  No requirements!  No apologies!  No demands! Just a simple, “Yes, come as you are.” You see, the “Man” in the middle had one characteristic that makes Him different from any other person on earth. He never gives up on one of His children. Period! End of discussion!

Today’s Scripture

Thoughts for Today

Thanksgiving is recognition of what God has done. Praise is linked to who God is.

As we thank God for specific blessings, we gain a better perspective of his character … and then can more fully praise him for who he is.

Thanksgiving says, “Lord, I thank you for healing me of cancer.” Praise says, “Lord, thank you because you are my Healer.”

Thanksgiving says, “Lord, thank you for comforting me when I suffered that loss.” Praise says, “Lord, thank you because you are my Comforter.”

Thanksgiving says, “Lord, thank you for helping me pay that bill.” Praise says, “Lord, thank you because you are my Provider.”

And so, dwelling on our blessings and thanking God for what he has done help us grow in knowledge of who he is. As we praise him for who he is, our relationship with him and our trust in him are strengthened.

Consider this …

What challenges or problems are you facing today?

The more you recognize God’s blessings and thank him, the more you can grow in your understanding of his character. Along with this growth of understanding comes a strengthening of faith. As you prepare to ask God to meet your need, first meditate on all he has done for you in the past. Thank him for each thing that comes to mind. Don’t rush this time of thanksgiving. Let the thanksgiving naturally flow into praising him for who he is. You will find as you do this, that your faith will be strengthened. You will be more able to trust God and to believe that he will meet your present need.

Prayer

Lord, I do thank you for all you have done for me. Praise you for your faithfulness. You have always met my needs. Sometimes you met them in a different way and time than I had asked, but your way and your time have always proved to be the best way and time. Help me trust you and your plan for this present need. In Jesus’ name …

Bird Nest

Do not be dismayed, for the Lord thy God is  with you anywhere you go. Joshua 1:9

Recently I discovered a Blue Jay nest in a tree in our front yard. I  enjoyed watching the mother glide into the tree with food in beak, ready to  nourish her little ones. Two days ago I heard a faint peeping from another tree  out front. I walked close to the tree, peered up into the branches, and sure  enough- another nest with baby birds. These fledglings were Cardinals;  undistinguishable by themselves, but unmistakable as the brilliant red feathered  father and the less glamorous mother swooped in and out of the tree .Each of  these sets of bird parents had to build a nest and then nurture their  young.
God has called us to build our relationship with Him and nurture  it to maturity. Just as the birds intertwined twigs, leaves, grasses and roots  to weave their nest, so Christians must build a personal relationship with God  through Jesus Christ. We must nurture this relationship, feeding it with God’s  Word, developing it through prayer, and promoting it with Christian fellowship,  church attendance and, if possible, Bible studies. I am thankful for the beauty  of nature that has unfolded before my very eyes here in my own front yard. I am  thankful, also, for the privilege to build and nurture my own personal  relationship with God. I pray, that as you are nourished and grow in the faith,  you can leave the nest and soar to great spiritual heights- serving God on your  entire journey.

Philippians 2:9-11

Thoughts on today’s verse
When Jesus is exalted, when his name is praised and his glory confessed, rather than being insulted or blasphemed, God is honored. Praise be the glorious name of Jesus and the grace of our God!
Prayer:
Precious Savior, Jesus Christ my Lord, your name is wonderful! Your sacrifice for my sin was so loving and generous. I am so thankful that our Father raised you from the dead and that through you I will be able to be with God and worship you all of eternity! You are glorious, Jesus my Lord!

he Bible tells us that one of the highest, ultimate goals that God has in store for each one of us is our transformation in Him – and this transformation is accomplished by the renewing of our mind. The Bible tells us that God wants to sanctify us and transform us into the express image of His Son Jesus Christ. He wants to make us into a better and more holy people, both on the inside and the outside.

Here is the specific verse from Scripture that will tell us that this kind of transformation is actually done by the renewing of our minds in the Lord:

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

I believe this transformation process has 3 major steps to it. They are as follows:

1. Knowledge From The Word

The first thing each Christian must know is exactly what it is that God wants to change about us. If you do not know exactly what it is God wants to do with you in this sanctification-transformation process, then you will have a very hard time in being able to fully cooperate with Him once He does try to start the renewal and transformation process on the inside of you.

There are a million and one self-help books on the market, but there is only one Book that will tell you exactly what it is God wants to do with you on the inside to change you for the better – and that Book is the Holy Bible. There are no other books out there that will tell you the specific and exact points that God is looking to target to make this transformation occur in the way that He would really like.

The Bible tells us that this sanctification-transformation process is actually done by the Holy Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit will not start this transformation process in you until He has something to work with – and that something is knowledge – and that knowledge can only be obtained from the Bible.

God expects you to play a direct part in this transformation process if He is going to start to work it in you. In the three steps that will get this transformation process going for you – you will be responsible for doing the first two steps. If you are willing to put some quality time and effort in doing these first two steps, then God will do His part, and He will then actually do all of step 3 for you in order to make this kind of transformation really possible to achieve in this lifetime.

The first step will be to study the Bible for the specific points that God will be looking to target to change you into the kind of person He really wants you to become in Him. Since many of these verses pertaining to all of this are scattered throughout the entire Bible, I am going to list, in subsequent articles, some of the most powerful verses in all of Scripture – showing you exactly what godly and saintly qualities God will want to work and impart into the very core of your personality.

King David tells us in the Old Testament that we are to meditate on the Word of God. To meditate means to think about, to chew on, to try and figure out what God is trying to tell us in His Word – and then to try and see how these divine truths can be applied in our daily life, and how we can get some of these positive qualities worked and imparted into our personalities.

If you will spend some good, quality time really studying and meditating on what is in these specific verses I will be listing in these other articles in this Sanctification section of our site, you will then have right at your fingertips exactly what it is that God wants to start working into your personality. And once you have the basic knowledge of what these positive and godly qualities are going to be that God will be looking to impart into you – then you will be ready for step two.

The reason I have the word “mindset” listed in the title of this article is because you have to know exactly what it is that you have to “set your mind on” before God can really kick this transformation process into full gear – hence the word “mindset.”

You have to learn how to develop “right thinking” in the Lord, but you cannot develop right thinking in the Lord unless you first know exactly what it is that you should be thinking right about. The Scripture verses that will be listed in these subsequent articles will show you all the things that God will want you to think right about in order to help you with this renewing of your mind.

2. Put On Positive Qualities – Put Away Negative Qualities

You will find two key words that will be repeated several times in many of the Scripture verses that will follow in these other articles. These two key words are “putting on” and “putting away.”

The Bible tells us that we are the ones who are to try and “put on” the good and godly qualities that God will want us to have operating in our personalities, and to “put away” all of the bad and negative qualities that He will not want us to have operating in our personalities.

This step right here is where many Christians are missing the boat. They have been walking with the Lord for years and they wonder why there has not been many changes in the very cores of their personalities. Where is the love, joy, peace, sound mind, and self-control that the Bible promises me once I fully commit my life to the Lord? Why is it that I still have a problem in controlling my temper, my cussing, and my critical and judgmental spirit?

Once you know the Bible tells you to have self-control over your bad temper and over your condescending and critical attitudes – then it will be your job at this point to make some kind of concerted effort to actually “put away” these kinds of negative and destructive qualities from your personality.

Example – say you have a problem with a bad temper. The least little thing will set you off. The first step, as described above, is to find the specific verses from the Bible on this topic so you can see exactly what God’s Word has to say about having bad and quick tempers. Once you know what God’s opinion really is on the matter through His Word – then you will have the appropriate knowledge to work with in order to try and tackle this problem.

Once you see in God’s Word that He does not want His people having bad and quick tempers – then you will now be ready for step 2. Now here is where your part will really come into play.

Now that you know God wants your bad temper removed from your personality – He will now expect you to try and put away this bad and negative quality when it does want to erupt. You will now have to start to engage with your quick and bad temper every single time you find yourself in a situation that will start to trigger its release. You will now have to make some kind of attempt on your end to “put away” your bad temper and “put on” the quality of self-control.

Say someone has just cut you off in traffic. Your normal response may be to start cussing at this person and try to flip him off if you can get close enough to him to do it. Your bad temper has now been fully triggered like it does every time someone cuts you off in traffic.

At this point, you have to make the best effort you can to try and control the release of your bad temper. You may have to literally bite your tongue to keep all the cuss words from flying out of your mouth. When your bad temper releases on you, it is like a fire that explodes out of your belly. Once this fire starts to explode, you have to make a very strong and concerted effort to neutralize it before the fire hits your mouth and causes you to start cussing.

You will have to try and put on the godly quality of self-control in order to try and douse the fire – like pouring cold water on a hot fire. You will have to tell yourself, and give yourself a pep talk that you will directly engage with your bad temper every single time you find yourself in a situation that will trigger its release.

At first, you may not have much success, because the release of your bad temper has become such an automatic bad habit. It has become an automatic response to certain situations. But if you keep at it, over the course of time you will start to get more self-control over it, and you will then be able to dramatically reduce the number of times that you will actually go off.

The reason your bad temper triggers so easily is because you are weak in the quality of self-control. Self-control is one of the qualities that God wants to impart and work into your personality. You will see this positive quality mentioned numerous times in the verses to follow in these other articles.

By attempting to put on this very positive quality into your personality, you will have the live ammunition you will need to not only be able to overcome a bad and nasty temper, but other bad and negative qualities such as too much of a critical and judgmental spirit, an unforgiving spirit, and too much pride, arrogance, and haughtiness. The quality of self-control can really help you “put away” many of these bad and toxic qualities that the Lord really does not want operating in your personality.

The same approach goes for trying to incorporate positive qualities into your personality. The Bible tells us that God wants us to be loving, kind, generous, and gentle people.

Some people do not have many of these positive qualities operating in them due to all of the bad things that may have happened to them in this life. What God wants you to do anyway is to try and “put on” some of these positive and godly qualities. Try to the best of your abilities to become more loving, more patient, more kind – even if you do not feel like it. If you will make some kind of decent and concerted effort to do this on your end, then God will start to do His part – which will now lead us into step 3.

Each one of us only has a certain amount of mental and emotional strength in our own personal makeups. We can only go so far with step 2. We can only get ourselves to a certain point in being able to become more loving, more kind, and more patient. Our best is obviously not going to be good enough to get this transformation process properly completed to the degree that the Lord would really like in this lifetime.

God wants to make us more loving, patient, kind, and peaceful than we could ever get ourselves to be by using our own natural strength. So how can the Lord do this?

If we have spent good, quality time studying the Bible in reference to the changes God wants to make into our personalities – and we have tried to the best of our abilities to put on the good, godly, and saintly qualities that He would really like to have operating in our personalities – then how can God get us up to the level that He is really looking for as you will see in the Scripture verses to follow?

Since our best is obviously not going to be good enough – how can God complete this transformation process to the degree that would really please Him in this lifetime? This will now lead us into step 3.

Psalms 25:5

When the believer has begun with trembling feet to walk in the way of the Lord, he still asks to be led onward like a little child upheld by its parent’s helping hand, and he yearns to receive further instruction in the alphabet of truth. Experimental teaching is the burden of this prayer. David knew much, but he felt his ignorance and desired to be still in the Lord’s school: four times over in two verses he applies for a scholarship in the college of grace. It would be better for many professors if instead of following their own devices and cutting out new paths of thought for themselves, they would inquire for the good old ways of God’s own truth and beseech the Holy Ghost to give them sanctified understandings and teachable spirits.

For you are the God of my salvation.” Jehovah is the Author and Perfecter of salvation to His people. Reader, is He the God of your salvation? Do you find in the Father’s election, in the Son’s atonement, and in the Spirit’s quickening all the grounds of your eternal hopes? If so, you may use this as an argument for obtaining further blessings; if the Lord has ordained to save you, surely He will not refuse to instruct you in His ways. It is a happy thing when we can address the Lord with the confidence that David displays here; it gives us great power in prayer and comfort in trial.

For you I wait all the day long.” Patience is the fair handmaid and daughter of faith; we cheerfully wait when we are certain that we shall not wait in vain. It is our duty and our privilege to wait upon the Lord in service, in worship, in expectancy, in trust all the days of our life. Our faith will be tried faith, and if it is of the true kind, it will bear continued trial without yielding. We shall not grow weary of waiting upon God if we remember how long and how graciously He once waited for us.

HE LOVED

I stared at the blank page nervously. The school assignment was to write  your own obituary but how was I supposed to write a summation of my life when I  hadn’t even lived it yet?

I looked to my left and right and saw people pouring paragraphs out of  their pens. I tried to think of what I wanted to accomplish in my life but my  crazily racing thoughts crashed into each other. I glanced back at my clean  sheet of paper and my writer’s block intensified. I tried to imagine the man I  wanted to become but couldn’t see him clearly. Looking up at the clock on the  wall I saw that there were only fifteen minutes left in class. Finally, in a  panic I scribbled down a few sentences of what I hoped someday to do and turned  it in. Let’s just say when I got the paper back it wasn’t the highest grade I  had ever gotten.

If I had that assignment to do over today, however, I think that my  obituary would be even shorter. It would probably get me an F on the assignment,  but it would get me an A in life. In fact, I would sum it up in two words: He  Loved. To love is what I want to do today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my  life. To love is what living is all about. The rest is just details. Everything  about living well and good and right is wrapped up in the arms of love. To love  is to serve, to give, to be kind, and to help others. To love is to have joy and  to bring joy as well. To love is to make this world a better place just by being  in it. To love is to create a little Heaven everyday while still here on Earth.  To love is to be the wonderful child, caring parent, tender spouse, fantastic friend, and beautiful person that you have always  wanted to be. To love is to become the bright, shining soul that God meant for  you to become.

Fill your days with love then and you will have truly lived. Fill  yourself with love and you will be the best possible you. Fill your life with  love and your obituary will take care of itself.

Good Morning!

It was a dark, stormy night. The young Marine was on his first  assignment, and it was guard duty.
A General stepped out taking his dog  for a walk. The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a perfect  salute, and snapped out “Sir, Good Evening, Sir!”
The General, out for  some relaxation, returned the salute and said “Good evening soldier, nice night,  isn’t it?”
Well it wasn’t a nice night, but the Private wasn’t going to  disagree with the General, so the he saluted again and replied “Sir, Yes  Sir!”.
The General continued, “You know there’s something about a stormy  night that I find soothing, it’s really relaxing. Don’t you agree?”
The  Private didn’t agree, but them the private was just a private, and responded  “Sir, Yes Sir!”
The General, pointing at the dog, “This is a Golden  Retriever, the best type of dog to train.”
The Private glanced at the  dog, saluted yet again and said “Sir, Yes Sir!”
The General continued “I  got this dog for my wife.”
The Private simply said “Good trade  Sir!”

John 19:28-30

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

It is finished!

Take a moment before you read the rest of this devotional and think about the meaning of those words Jesus said. It is finished.

The work Jesus was doing was paying for your sins. That work? It is finished!

Was His payment enough? It is finished!

Are you in danger of doing something bad enough that Jesus’ death did not pay for it? It is finished!

Did Jesus take all of God’s anger that was directed toward you? It is finished!

Is there still some religious activity you need to do to finish what Jesus started in purchasing your salvation? No—it is finished!

Should we still be giving our lives to the work of the Lord on this earth, honoring Him in all that we do? Yes! But is that work done in order to earn our salvation? No. The work of salvation is finished. When you were united with Christ there was nothing else to do for salvation.

Thoughts on today’s verse
Of all the names for God in the Bible, this is my favorite: Him who is able to do immeasurably more. Our God is the same God who parted the Red Sea and fed 5,000 on a green hillside with only a couple of sardine sandwiches. He longs to do more than we ask and imagine, but most of us haven’t really given him much of a challenge. Dream big dreams for God. Then hang on!
Prayer:
Almighty and awesome God, do in our day what you did in past days. Give us faith to believe and then amaze us at the smallness of our faith. Give us vision to see your plan and do greater things. We ask this, not for ourselves or our experience, but for your glory and the salvation of our world. In Jesus name. Amen.
